JKD- "way of the intercerpting fist"

 One of the main principles found in Taiji states "They strike first, but I arrive first".  JKD takes that mentality one step further, and uses movement to dictate the tempo and control the space. JKD is pre-emptive; it attacks the aggressor's movement and ability to strike. Neither mentality is superior.

Practitioners train to be extremely fast, quick and mobile (the goal is freedom of individual expression). The true weakness to the system is the huge learning curve to become proficient. There are no stylisitic limits, so this allows for unlimted growth and depth. This becomes very problematic, as that freedom allows for variations in training, and such an open-mind often times lacks focus and discipline (prerequisites for any Martial Artist). So, there truly is no standard. JKD therefore becomes the title lended to the average "free-stylist".

On the flip-side that is also the beauty of JKD. That freedom allows a great boxer, grappler, or kicker, to step outside of their art and embrace the other ranges of combat (safely and with the rules of sport removed).

JKD allows the person to be free of styles. They become a Martial Artist in search of the most effective combative techniques that they can master and apply.  

Once JKD has transmitted that concept of freedom, it should be seen as a tool in your development and  then discarded. The end result is you and your skill set. There are no words, titles, belts, dans, or sashes...

Just self-respect, wisdom, and skills...

with absolutely no room for pretense or illusions.

EFFECTIVENESS OF JKD 

The validity of the techniques shouldn't even be questioned. The ability to stop a fight is beyond obvious. Anything too lethal, is illegal in the ring.  Our system is linear, in-depth, and technical. All techniques incapicate the aggressor, and have immediate potential to maim or kill. This is the nature of "INTERCEPTION"
